Beth Haller, Ph.D., is Professor of Journalism/New Media at Towson University in Maryland . She is the former co-editor of the Society for Disability Studies’ scholarly journal, Disability Studies Quarterly, www.dsq-sds.org , (2003-2006). She currently maintains a blog on disability issues in the news, Media dis&dat, http://media-dis-n-dat.blogspot.com/ , as well as a Web site on media and disability research, www.media-disability.net.

She has been researching media images of disability since 1991, when she did a master’s thesis at the University of Maryland-College Park on the c overage of Deaf persons in The Washington Post and New York Times . The 1988 Gallaudet University Deaf President Now protest inspired her interest in news media coverage of disability issues. Her Ph.D. dissertation at Temple University investigated e lite news media coverage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Her media and disability research has subsequently been published in Disability Studies Quarterly, Disability & Society, Journalism Studies, Journal of Popular Film and Television, Research in Social Science and Disability, Journal of Comic Art, Journal of Magazine and New Media Research, Mass Comm Review, and Journalism History. She has also written a number of book chapters and presented numerous conference papers on the topic. She has been a media research consultant for the Center for an Accessible Society in San Diego .

Haller is a native of Fort Worth , Texas , and received her undergraduate degree in journalism from Baylor University . She has worked as a county government, health and environment, and general assignment reporter at the Amarillo ( Texas ) Globe-News, The Ruidoso (NM) News, and The Southern Illinoisan. She worked in the area of computer-assisted reporting at the San Jose (CA) Mercury-News in 1997 as an American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) Fellow.

She has worked at Towson University since 1996, where she teaches Feature Writing, Media Law, News Reporting, Magazine Publishing, Honors Introduction to Mass Communication, and Mass Communication Research. She is the co-author of the textbook, An Introduction to News Reporting: A Beginning Journalist’s Guide (Allyn & Bacon, 2005).
